Sprouts & Shutters: Boswell's Party Supply Store Closed

The party goods store in Pleasanton has closed. The Danville and Lafayette Boswell's stores are still open, according to the owner.

The windows are dark and a "For Lease" sign is hanging above what used to be Boswell's Party Supplies in Pleasanton. A store employee says the Pleasanton location closed right after graduation, around mid-June.

Owner Luke Boswell says he and his wife, Mary Ellen Boswell closed the store after 29 years due to a combination of factors.

"We signed the lease in 2008, right before the economy tanked," Boswell said. "The lease was up for renewal in June and we were looking for a bit of relief in the rent. The management company did not want to drop the price. We didn't want to leave. The store was also a bit small and we cold have used more space."

Boswell says they would consider reopening the Pleasanton store, if the opportunity presented itself.

"We like Pleasanton a lot and had a lot of loyal customers that we hated to abandon them," Boswell said.

The Boswells posted a statement about the closing on Yelp:

Established in 1984

After 29 years in Pleasanton, Boswell's of Pleasanton is closing.  We would like to thank all of our wonderful customers for all their support over the years and hope that if they are ever shopping in Danville or Lafayette they will visit us.

In the end we could not come to an agreement with our landlord.

Thank you for shopping at Boswell's for all these years, we will truly miss Pleasanton.

Luke and Mary Ellen Boswell

Boswell says the Danville and Lafayette Boswell's stores are still open for business.
