Sprouts & Shutters: Foundations Tutoring Open

The tutoring business opened last month.

A new tutoring business serving Tri-Valley opened on Oct. 14 in Pleasanton.

Owner Diana Orton Johansson told Patch, via email:

"We specialize in kids who struggle with reading, spelling and writing and started this center because the PUSD Barton Reading and Spelling Program, as well as the Wells Middle School Barton Reading program in Dublin, were cut in 2012, even though there was huge community support and approximately 80 volunteer tutors. We knew the need for specialized reading support did not go away with the elimination of the program.  So we took our 12 years of experience running this exemplary program and started Foundations Tutoring. It is the same high quality program that transformed 400 plus poor readers into successful students.  After 6 months of tutoring, middle and high school students improved an average of two grade levels and elementary students increased an average of 40 percentile points.  We hope to someday be able to offer a nonprofit branch where students who cannot afford tutoring can get help."

Foundations Tutoring is located at 4713 First Street, Suite 150 in Pleasanton.
