Livermore Pleasanton Firefighters responded to the fire, reported by a tree trimming crew, around 12:42 p.m. on Saturday. Smoke from the blaze was visible all through the Tri-Valley.

According to Livermore Pleasanton Fire Battalion Chief Paul Legasa, the flames from the fire were visible from the garage of the home when fire crews arrived.

Legasa wrote, via email:

"The fire was contained to the garage, and quickly knocked down by the initial attack companies. Damage to the garage and contents were extensive. Two vehicles inside the garage were also destroyed. There were no injuries associated with this fire. The Pleasanton Police Department and Paramedics Plus Ambulance also responded.

The dollar loss from this fire has not yet been determined. The cause of this fire appears to be from fireplace ashes, believed to have cooled, that were placed in a plastic container outside of the residence.

According to the NFPA, and James McMullen Fire Expert; Fires caused by improperly disposed fireplace ash account for thousands of fires each year. Ashes can smolder for days, and should be allowed to cool in the fire place before removing. Ashes should be stored in a metal container with a tight fitting lid, off of decks, porches, out of garages, and far away from structures.  Soak ashes in the metal container in water before replacing the lid.

The use of fireplaces and wood stoves increase during the winter months.  To better ensure your safety, additional information regarding fire place safety can be found on the internet."
