A husband and wife suffered "severe injuries" after being hit by a car last night as they were walking in the crosswalk on Santa Rita Road near Francisco Street, police officials say.

According to a statement released by police, the collision, which shut down a section of Santa Rita Road for several hours for the investigation, occurred around 8:37 p.m. on Saturday night.

Police say the 29-year-old driver from Danville had been driving northbound on Santa Rita Road when the pedestrians, who were walking eastbound in the crosswalk for Francisco Street, were struck. According to police, the driver stayed at the scene and cooperated.

The husband and wife were both taken to Eden Medical Center with "severe injuries."

Police are not releasing the names of the husband and wife and say the Pleasanton Police Department’s Special Operations Unit was used to handle the investigation.

Anybody who may have information related to the investigation is asked to call the Pleasanton Police Department at (925) 931-5100.
