110,160 Meals Packed in One Day at the Fair
Kids Against Hunger Pleasanton and volunteers from the fair prepare for Alameda County emergencies.
Despite the heat and humidity, over 750 fairgoers teamed up with Kids Against Hunger Pleasanton to help pack 110,160 meals to be stored in case of major disaster in Alameda County. 100,000 of the meals will be stored at the Pleasanton Fairgrounds, while the rest of the food will be sent to Haiti, according to Sherri Leal Director of Kids Against Hunger in Pleasanton.
The Pleasanton Fairgrounds are an officially designated Regional Disaster Recovery Center for Alameda County.
Leal says that volunteers had already helped to pack more than 85,000 meals before 5 p.m. on Wednesday. Leal and her all volunteer staff worked with a wide range of fairgoers to pack and prepare the food to be boxed up and labeled for storage or shipment.
According to the Kids Against Hunger Pleasanton website, the food being packaged contains "white rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables and 21 vitamins & minerals." The mission of Kids Against Hunger is to "feed starving children and help end world hunger."
The next meal packing event is at the Cornerstone Fellowship Church in Livermore today and tomorrow. Click here for more information. Visit the Kids Against Hunger Pleasanton website to see how you can donate.
