News About Amador Valley, Foothill Lacrosse

NCS lacrosse could conflict with Foothill Senior Ball

It’s the time of year for local high school athletic teams to head into the post-season competition and as usual — we should expect a good level of success from out teams at Amador Valley and Foothill high schools.

One sport where the Pleasanton schools have continued to excel is the fast-growing lacrosse.  All four varsity teams in town have advanced to the North Coast Section playoffs that start Wednesday night.

There will be a double-header Wednesday at Amador, as the No. 7 seeded guys open with Davis at 5 p.m., followed by 6th-seeded Amador girls hosting Granada.

Only Foothill boys will play Wednesday, as the No. 4 seeded Falcons will play host to Northgate in a 7 p.m. game. The Foothill girls were awarded the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye.

Second round games have traditionally been scheduled for Saturday night and through the wisdom on NCS (or the lack of may be more spot on) games have been set for night games.

NCS has long felt night games draw better than day games and since gate revenue is one way NCS gets revenue, they have been reluctant to change games to the afternoon.

But what happens when a school has their Senior Ball set for the night of an NCS playoff game? Such is the case for Foothill this week. Barring a major upset, the Foothill boys will join the Foothill girls in the second round of the tournament. A double-header at Foothill will be held, but playing on Saturday night would put the seniors on their respective teams in a tough spot.

Play in the game or go to their Senior Ball. Twenty years ago, it would have been a no-brainer as kids would have chosen the game every time. But we live in different times now and I am guessing there would be some seniors opting for the Ball over their teammates and the game.

As of Monday morning, it appears NCS has moved the Foothill girls’ game to Friday night, but a decision on the boys’ game cannot be reached until after Wednesday’s games. Here’s hoping NCS does what’s best for the kids and move the game to Friday night as well.
